Warhammer Tournament Report Pt 2 [NICON 09]

Day 2 Match ups and Battle Reports (Part 1)
Dwarfs should count as small targets shouldn't they?

Last day of the tournament and three games to be played in the following order:
  • vs. Brettonians (2,25o pts).
  • vs. High Elves (2,250 pts).
  • vs. Wood Elves (2,250 pts).
Well Day 2 started well enough Chelsea won the FA Cup, but then the Chiefs lost the Super 14 and it was freaking cold. Ended up snowing on way home, had to drive through a blizzard part of the way would hate to think what the guys going North ran into.

Game 5 vs. Brettonians
Ok, Anthony will forgive me I hope for butchering the names of his units but I believe he fielded the following.

General on Griffon
Damsel
Archers x12
Archers x12
Halberdiers x25
Knights Errant x9
Knights x9
Knights x6
Grail Knights x6
Pegasus Knights x3
Mounted Yeomen x5
Mounted Yeomen x5
Trebuchet

Never having played Brettonians before the only thing I knew was that their Knights were horrible and that I was going to get monstered in the movement phase. Had some advice from other players at tournament, but when your army only marches 6" its a bit difficult to counter cavalry moving at 16-18". Brettonians gave up first go in order to get the Blessing bonus of the 5+ WS. I let them have it reckoning that getting one round of shooting in before I was swamped with Knights would be a good thing.

Turns 1-2
Basically my only real option here was to sit back and wait for the Knights to come charging in. All I could really hope to do was shoot down a few on the way in and present a narrow enough frontage that only a few units could hit me at a time. Organ Gun was once again deployed in the forest this time to shoot across the front of my units. I had originally planned to put it on the left blocking the gap between the forest and the table edge, but changed my mind. A lone Bolt-Thrower and unit of Quarrellers were stuck out on the flank to provide some bait, and additional shooting options.

Deployment & Turn 1

Initial shooting was pretty poor. Bolt-Throwers continued to miss, and for some reason I forgot about the fast cavalry and shot at the Archers instead?!?!? Some minor wounds on either side saw Turn 1 end pretty quickly with the Brettonians half way across the board already.

Turn 2 shooting on my part was better directed cutting one unit of fast cavalry down to a single model (who passed his panic check) and knocking 3-4 Knights out of the saddle across various units. The 2nd fast cavalry unit fled from the MR Challenge. Shooting from the Brettonians was more effective though. After missing in Turn 1 the Trebuchet scored a direct hit on the Hammerers killing 7 of them. Following that the Knights all charged in with only a couple getting hit by the Quarrellers stand and shoot. Initial combats were horribly brutal the Longbeards simpyl disintegrated, as did the Quarrellers on either flank. At the end beginning of Turn 3 half my army was dead and I was now surrounded and pinned down.

Turns 3-6
These turns were pretty much confined to the bottom left hand corner of the board. The Knight unit that had charged the lone Quarreller unit had fled off the board, and some of the Knights who charged the Longbeards did the same thing. This at least gave me a modicum of respite and did allow me to charge the Knights who hadnt fled with one Hammerers unit. On my left the 2nd Hammerer unit was in position to hit the Knights who had come through the gap, but they chose to retreat leaving me without a reachable target. I vaguely considered going after them but instead turned and headed back toward the 1st Hammerer unit that was now heemed in by the Pegasus Knights. These were fresh from slaughtering the Gyrocopter and landed in the rear of the Hammerers.

The final few turns saw the 1st Hammerer units locked into combat with the Pegasus Knights in their rear, Knights and a Damsel to their front and more Knight (units that returned to the board after pursuing off it) in their flank. They were later joined by the Brettonian general. While I managed to kill the Pegasus Knights and knock down more than few Knights in that resulting melee I couldn't do it fast enough to turn things to my advantage. The 2nd unit of Hammerers was also too far away to assist quickly enough and consequently it could only watch as their comrades were cut to pieces surrounded on all sides. At one point I had only a single Hammerer left but even he couldnt stand long enough for the other unit to come in.

Final Result - Victory to Brettonians 20-4

Game 6 vs. High Elves
This was a very enjoyable game against an opponent with a very different High Elf army list, it consisted of a lot of core units and very few specials which for HE is quite rare. My opponents list for this battle was:

General on Griffon
Mage
Noble
Spears x23
Spears x15
Spears x15
Archers x10
Archers x10
Dragon Princes x5
Silver Helms x5
Tiranoic Chariot
Tiranoic Chariot
White Lions x10
Ellyrian Reavers x5
Bolt-Thrower
Bolt-Thrower
Eagle
Eagle

Turns 1-2
I had a fairly simple plan in mind for this battle. Shoot down as many of the faster Elven units that I could then charge in with my Warriors to smash over the Spear Elves. If shooting proved ineffective then I would simply retreat behind the forest and buildings and let them come to me.

Deployment & Turn 1

Elves moved first and basically rushed at the missle units I had stationed on the hill. Elven shooting either missed everything or failed to wound what it did hit. In response I targeted everything at the Spears and Chariot advancing up the middle. Quarrellers took out 4 Spears, one Bolt-Thrower killed a Chariot with a S7 shot (RO Penetrating !!!) while the Organ Gun rolled the first of 3 successive 10's on the artillery dice to cut down 6 Spear Elves. One Spear unit flees the other remains steadfast.

Turn 2

Turn 2 sees the Elven cavalry and Eagles charge the Quarrellers and Bolt-Throwers on and near the hill on my right flank. While more shooting from the Organ Gun cuts down 8 Spears in the centre unit which has now advanced in their direction. On the left the Quarrellers give up their quest to reach the building and instead reform ready to take the charge of the Reavers, and to direct any overrun away from the accompanying Hammerer unit. The Hammerers themselves had advanced toward the White Lions hoping to either charge or be charged by them. In melee combat the Bolt-Thrower crews and Quarrellers hold on despite heavy loses and the Elves are unable to break through.

Turns 3-4
The Elven turn starts badly when the centre Spear unit flees from the MR Challenge, and the unit fleeing from shooting in Turn 1 fails to rally and continues to run. The Elves are also unable to break through the Dwarven artillery crews who stubbornly hold on, although the Quarrellers do eventually give into the Silver Helms. In the Dwarfs turn my Organ Gun rolls its 3rd successive 10 scoring 10 hits, and 6 wounds on the remaining Elven Chariot blowing it too pieces. The Bolt-Thrower crews finally give out allowing the Elven Cavalry units to wheel toward the infantry, and the Gyrocopter harries the fleeing Spear killing yet more of them.

Turn 4 starts badly for the Elves as the fleeing Spear units fail to rally (again), flee through a Bolt Thrower and panic their crew. The Reavers on the Dwarf left charge the Quarrellers who manage to hold while the White Lions refuse to attack the Hammerers and flee from their subsequent charge. The Quarrellers last only 1 more round against the Reavers though and the Hammerers are forced to turn around to face them in the next turn. In the centre of the field the Longbeards and 2nd Hammerer unit have wheeled right toward the Elven cavalry units. With the Spears either retreating or below 1/2 strength they are no longer worried about their flanks from that direction. With Elven eagles in the way however they cannot charge the Elven horses so instead the Runesmith opts to charge the Eagles single handed.

Turn 5-6
The Spears rally in these turns and move up fast enough to charge the Organ Gun and the Longbeards/Hammerers who are also charged by the Dragon Princes & Silver Helms. The Reavers do their best to avoid the other Hammerers unit which then retreats into the nearby building for the remainder of the battle, as the White Lions return. In the grand melee in the centre of the board the Hammerers cut down the Dragon Princes and the flanking Spears. On the far side of the board the Gyrocopter is also fluttering around firing at the Elven archers. But in the final round of combat the Hammerers are charged by the Griffon rider and the Silver Helms, fail their panic check and are routed before the Longbeards can come to their assistance. Unfortunately for me despite doing large amounts of damage to most of the Elven units, I failed to concentrate my fire and only finished off one complete unit of Spears. This seriously upsets the final points tally with the result tbeing...

Final Result - Victory to High Elves 16-8

Always tough when it feels like you are being successful but the odd point-scoring system betrays you. Sometimes I miss the old point-for-point scoring. I have watched several games where certain armies lose 1 model less than half their strength or lose all but 1 and thus give up few or no points. My kingdom for one more wound...

I did the right thing in that game and targeted his infantry so my warriors could move on his cavalry units. But I made a mistake in not killing of each unit completely - cost me around 400pts
