WIP - HE Dragon Princes & RBT's

Opening pictures of the Dragon Prince unit which is my next major HE project. Painting 7 of them in total although I have 10 as a unit of 7 is all I intend on fielding in any tournament army. Did consider using Silver Helm horses for the unit as they stand up better and as more of the models have kept their tails.

Horses are based on a mixture of moulded bases from IronHalo.net and standard cavalry bases covered in sand. Going to keep colour scheme fairly simple and mutted. Surcoats on horses will be white along with reins in similar fashion to how I paint white robes on Elven infantry. Armour on horses heads will be strictly metallic with highlights of bronze (as with Eagles on White Lions helmets) on the Dragon emblems but nowhere else.

Horses I am aiming to turn out something like the picture below with lighter muted grey coats and speckled (spotty?) bits all over them.

Still haven't figured out how I want to paint the Princes themselves so am trawling the forums/blogs/web for ideas.

Finished the crews for my Repeater Bolt-Throwers last night. I have four of these old style metal Bolt-Throwers which honestly I quite like. Painting the Bolt-Throwers themselves has been problematic as the overall blandness of the model doesn't help, i.e., there isn't any molding or sculpting on the legs and base. RBT themselves are still unfinished.

What they looked like originally after I brought them 2nd hand

Bolt-Throwers have been glued onto 40mmx40mm monster bases covered in Poly Filler and still need A LOT of work before they are completed. If these guys turn out OK I might strip and paint the other two as well.

Snow bases still need some work. Going to have to redo them all mixing Snow Flock with Baking Soda and water down PVA to get a better texture and overall effect.

Ah what a lovely surprise

My lovely wife surprised me with an extremely helpful present a magnifying lamp to help me with my painting. Used it for first time last night and it makes a hell of a difference, although it is somewhat disappointing to see your paint work up so close... shows up all the flaws. Managed to find a picture of the exact type - LED lights last for 100,000 hours apparently so thats A LOT of painting time.

Awesome present but even better is that she has agreed that I have to do alot more painting in order to learn how to use it properly :)

Archers completed & Forests for the White Lions

Finally completed my HE Archers the other night. Not perfect but good enough to pass muster. Also sat down with some twigs and various types of flock and decided (on the spur of the moment) to add a forest to my White Lions to make them stand out more. Have to say the process and the final look has come out better than I expected.

The process itself wasn't that difficult, fiddly, but not difficult. Found some twigs in my garden of various sizes and shapes. Selected ones that looked OK and weren't too wet (its being raining here for a while). Drilled a hole into those bases I wanted to have trees. Filled the hole with PVA inserted the tree and covered its base with a little bit of snow flock (for that windswept pile look). Watered down PVA onto tops of trees followed by GF9 Foliage and then a second layer of PVA with some more foresty looking flock on top of that. Quick spray with Sealer to lock it all in and hey presto - trees!!!

Archers were a bit more fiddly primarily as the molding on these older style models isn't that great and as successive runs of paint stripping had flattened out a lot of the edges causing some of the models to lose their detailing.

Bases just need a final tidy up and they are all done and its onto the Dragon Princes.

Dwarfs at 2,250pts for NATCON Tournament in April

After some great feedback from the guys at WargamerAU and Bugmans I have finalised my (possible) Dwarf list for NATCON in April. Whether I take them or not depends entirely on how quickly I can get my High Elves repainted however, but I think with time constraints the way they are I am 75% sure I will be submitting the Dwarf List below for that competition.

My 2009 Dwarf Tournament Army

Playing 8 games over three days is going to be tough, especially as I have only played 2 games of WHFB since October last year. So realistically I should go with an army I know well which is Dwarves.

Lord
w. Shield, Shieldbearers, RO Cleaving, RO Might, RO Resistance, RO Stone, MR Challenge, RO Furnace
Runesmith
w. Shield, RO Fire, RO Stone, RO Spellbreakingx2, RO Furnace
Thane
w. GW, MR Gromil, RO Furnace, MR Kragg, RO Snorri
BSB
w. RO Guarding, Strollaz
Longbeards x20
w. FC, Shields, MR Grungi
Warriors x10
w. Shields, Musician
Quarrellers x10
w. Shields, Musician
Hammerers x17
w. FC, Shields, RO Courage, RO Determination
Hammerers x17
w. FC, RO Battle, RO Stoicism, Shields
Organ Gun
Grudge Thrower
w. Engineer, RO Accuracy
Gyrocopter

TOTAL 2,246pts

Lord is reasonably tough at 1+ rerollable AS, has 4 S5/10 attacks plus Shieldbearers. Getting him into combat will depend upon using the MR Challenge effectively and on good deployment. RO Guarding on BSB gives him some survivability with 4+ AS and 5+ WS and accompanying Thane has +1 to hit with Snorri @S6 so can do some effective damage - will hit and wound most ppl on 2+.

Hammerers get RO Courage and RO Determination giving me 2 ITF units both of whom are stubborn and one of whom can be guarenteed to pass one crucial break test with RO Determination allowing you to take it one 1D6 - which when you stubborn means you will auto pass.

Only one shooting unit which is a change for me as I wanted the single unit of warriors for flexibility. As comparison my usual list contains 2 units of 10xQuarrellers and 2 of 10xWarriors. So adding the extra character and the Runic BSB has cost me 1 of each.

Only problem with posting these lists on places like WargamerAU is that all of the people ill end up facing visit that forum - but then NZ tournaments are open list so it makes no difference really. Still would be nice to surprise people :)

WM Battle Reports: Menoth vs. Khador/Circle

*ahem* snuck away early from work yesterday to play a couple of games of Warmachine against Toshi's Khador and Emmas Circle. Got three games in overall a 1v1 vs. Circle and 1v1 vs. Khador at 15pts each, and a 2v1 at 30pts against both of them.

Photos taken on Phone so not that great

Game 1 vs. Circle
Up against a small but reasonably powerful Circle force I took, as planned, the High Reclaimer with an infantry dominated 15pt list of:

- pReclaimer
- Revenger
- Knights Exemplar (6)
- Exemplar Seneschal
- Deliverer Sunburst
- Paladin Order of Wall
- Paladin Order of Wall

The two armies face eathother at game start with Menoth at the bottom of screen, the Sunburst is off to the left on a small hill

The Circle army and their horde of Fury tokens a system that still weirds me out

Game didnt start well Circle used the Crevice spell and their various other special abilities to great effect wiping out most of the Exemplars in the opening turn. The Revenger advanced forward as far as it could go to provide Arc Node coverage for the Reclaimer but with the primary infantry screen down I was in serious trouble early. A key issue was that Circle spells and abilities were not destroying my infantry but removing them from play (a confusing rule definition I haven't figured out yet) meaning I couldn't resurect them all.

AH HA HA take that Heretics my Holy Warriors return from Menoths embrace!!!

With only the Reclaimer and the Paladins left the game turned after my initial setbacks when I used the Reclaimers feat to resurrect one of the Seneschals and 2 Exemplars in the Circle Warcasters rear arc. Charging in straight away the Seneschal scored hits with both of his swords, and again with his special ability slamming the Circle caster 5" straight back killing him in one go.

Only looky looky the Circle caster is about to die

Game result as satisfying victory against Circle, but one balanced out by the fact that Emma is new to the game and is (unfortunately for her) not used to what Menoth can do. My Revenger did get slaughtered as did the Sunburst and half of the Exemplars. The damn pillar of salt and Crevice spells were down right irritating as well as extremely effective.

Game 2 vs. Khador
Slight variation to list this time around to include a heavy warjack, the Castigator, to counter Toshis prediliction for Beast 09 and Drago his Khador special Jacks. Again with High Reclaimer list was:

- pReclaimer
- Castigator
- Knights Exemplar (6)
- Deliverer Sunburst
- Paladin Order of Wall
- Paladin Order of Wall
- Wracks (3)

The holy army of Menoth face off against the Heretics of Khador

Castigator would hopefully be able to chomp through his units while the Knights did the rest. Paladins as usual hung back to as Warcaster protection. Wracks were there primarily as at 1pt they filled a gap in the pts and gave me some extra focus. But with the Reclaimer getting soul tokens from dead troopers they are a bit redundant with him.

Ok, not a good way to start. I rush straight ahead and next thing I know both heavy Khador Jacks have slammed into my Castigator and the two Paladins. One Paladin goes down as does the Castigator and the Knights get tangled up with the damn Mechanics. With the Reclimar wide open I have to pop my feat to resurect the only dead trooper, the Paladin, as a shield to stop the Khador Jacks charging him. So what does Toshi do - he tramples the new Paladin and all of the Exemplars leaving me with a couple of wracks and the Reclaimer left alive. Game over.

Game 3 vs. Khador & Circle @ 30/35pts
Facing two warcasters I was able to take 35pts vs. Khador and Circles 15 each to even the contest up. Originally planning on using the Reclaimer I noticed Feora was in the box of models I had brought with me so she popped out. Final list was:

- pFeora
- Heirophant
- Revenger
- Castigator
- Crusader
- Choir (4)
- Exemplar Seneschal
- Exemplar Seneschal
- Knights Exemplar (6)
- Deliverer Sunburst

Plan for this one was quite simple. With Toshi and Emma deploying on opposite sides of the board, Toshi with the Old Witch and her ScrapJack and Emma with the same Circle list from Game 1, I wanted to use the Revengers arc node to pin down the Old Witch while concentrating everything onto Circle. Kill them and then move onto Khador who were the weaker of the two lists in this game.

Best performers of this game were the Seneschals. They kept popping back up everywhere and getting healed thanks to Circle killing off the troopers around them. Even Pillar of Salt and endless Crevice spells (stupid thing should be limited - I mean honestly my Jacks must have been hopping from one chasm to the next across the board) I managed to butcher most of Circle in short order before turning my attention to Khador. Problem was by this stage Circle had done some serious damage. The Castigator was unable to take Focus and had nearly all of systems within a few points of being crippled, while the Crusader had lost 1/4 of its damage boxes. The Knights were down to a unit of 2, the Heirophant was dead (killed by stupid Cossack things), as were the Choir bar the leader and the Seneschals. With time running out (as I had to go home to have dinner with the family) we called the game a draw.

Was definately fun to play Feora again I just love setting stuff on fire, and Seneschals are brutal. Once I have finished repainting my High Elves Menoth will be getting the full paint-stripping, repainting treatment, Warjacks included. Might take me a year to do it but Ill get it done.

Warmachine is a lot of fun and was thoroughly enjoyable playing it again - even if I still struggle to beat Toshi whose encyclopedic knowledge of every armies strengths & weaknesses is somewhat scary - and will be taking WM to my local club more regularly from now on.

Dwarfs for NATCON?!?

Being realistic I am not sure that I will be able to finish painting my High Elves in time for NATCON in April, or least not in time for the final date to submit the army list by 21st March. To get a workable list together I still need to finish painting a full unit of 7 Dragon Princes, an Archmage, 10xArchers and 2xBolt-Throwers. If I want to take an infantry heavy list then there is also another unit of 20 Spearelves to finish off as well.

So, it looks like my Dwarfs might have to make another appearance on the tournament circuit this season. After some thought I am deciding between two options (a) going with my basic list from Skitterleap - balanced without anything too over the top but lacking in extras, or (b) something different.

Standard List for Dwarfs at 2,250pts would be

Lord
w. Shieldbearers, MR Swiftness, RO Cleaving, RO Might, RO Furnace, RO Sanctuary, RO Resistance, RO Stone
Runesmith
w. Shield, RO Stone, RO Fire, RO Spellbreakingx2, RO Furnace
BSB
w. MR Gromil, RO Cleaving, RO Might, RO Furnace
Longbeards x20
w. FC, Shields, MR Grungi
Warriors x10
w. Shields, Musician
Warriors x10
w. Shields, Musician
Quarrellers x10
w. Shields
Thunderers x10
w. Shields, Musician
Hammerers x18
w. FC, Shields, RO Battle, RO Stoicism
Hammerers x18
w. FC, Shields, RO Stoicism, RO Sanctuary
Organ Gun
Gyrocopter

The something different list would be

Lord
w. Shieldbearers, MR Swiftness, RO Cleaving, RO Might, RO Furnace, RO Sanctuary, RO Resistance, RO Stone
Runesmith
w. Shield, RO Stone, RO Fire, RO Spellbreakingx2, RO Furnace
BSB
w. MR Fear, Strollaz, Oath Stone
Thane
w. MR Gromil, GW, MR Kragg the Grimm, RO Fury, RO Furnace

First two characters are identical to list one. Big change is use of Runes on BSB with MR Fear (causing fear) and Strollaz (make free march move before Turn 1) adding some extra options. Additional Thane has been added in purely to guard the BSB who with Runes on his banner now only has a 4+ AS to protect him. Oath Stone on BSB adds MR1 meaning all three of my infantry units have MR1 with the Lord in the non-RO Sanctuary Hammerer unit.

Longbeards x20 (BSB & Thane)
w. FC, Shields, MR Grungi
Warriors x10
w. Shields, Musician
Quarrellers x10
w. Shields

Changes to BSB and Thane mean I have to drop 1 unit of 10 Warriors and 1 of 10 Quarrellers/Thunderers. I also lose the Musician on the remaining Quarreller unit. The lack of flexibility in losing the Warrior unit is balanced out by Strollaz and the lose of the Quarrellers by the Bolt-Throwers.

Hammerers x18 (Lord)
w. FC, Shields, RO Battle, RO Stoicism
Hammerers x18 (Runesmith)
w. FC, Shields, RO Stoicism, RO Sanctuary
Bolt-Thrower
w. Engineer, RO Penetrating
Bolt-Thrower
w. Engineer, RO Burning
Gyrocopter

Bolt-Throwers come in now in place of the Organ Gun. Longer range, less damaging but more reliable (sort of) and with 2 units you can spread them out more.

TOTAL 2,249 pts 5DD - 2 Scrolls

WHFB Battle Report - HE vs. Dwarfs @ 2,250pts

First game of WHFB for 2010 and first outing of my AM/Dragon Mage HE Tournament list. Up against Adams Anvil of Doom led Dwarf army.

Background to a battle - an Elves Hatred
Lord Sidathe Rythen Archmage of the Seventh House was well pleased soon he would be able to bring the full might of his magical power to bear on the dirty, cave dwelling, squat faced, bearded spawn who called themselves Dwarves. For generations his anger and hatred for the Dwarven race had burned within him and now with his foe deployed ahead of him on the field of battle that flame burned as hot as the blazing sun. His eyes and staff blazing with power Sidathe surveyed the troops at his command.

Deployed with a bodyguard of White Lions his slanted Elven eyes took in the Great Eagles and Shadow Warriors deployed to his right. These were tasked with killing the deadly Dwarven warmachines as fast as possible. This would allow the Dragon Princes of Caledor led by his armies Battle Standard Bearer Ranliin Dunebear free rein to charge through the Dwarven ranks. To his left a unit of citizen levy Spearmen and Archers were arrayed in plain sight, the bait into which he hoped to draw his Dwarven foe. Far to his left was Sidathe's most fearsome, but unpredictable, weapon a Dragon Mage of Caledor who even now was struggling to keep his impetuous mount (and himself) in check. Sidathe's plan was simple. Destroy the Dwarven missile troops and Warmachines with his magic and then let loose the Dragon Mage and his infantry on the remaining Dwarfs. Vengeance would be his today, Dwarven blood would flow.

The Battle Begins
Gaining the early initiative Sidathe voiced his contempt of the Dwarven Generals tactics scowling as he saw Dwarven units form up in a defensive formation around the hill atop which their warmachines sat. Ordering the advance his forces, except the Dragon Mage (who hopefully would be able to restrain himself), advanced forward seeking to draw the Dwarfs out into the open where they would be vulnerable. The first waves of magic crackled through the air and Sidathe felt nothing but joy as his power poured through him and out his fingers sending magical energy toward the Dwarven warmachines. Screaming loudly Dwarven artillery crewman collapsed to the ground as their engines of death and their armour began to burn. But his joy was shortlived his magic failed and his body convulsed with shock to hear and feel the chanting of a Dwarven RuneLord and the sound of his hammering on an Anvil of Doom. Soon though Elven arrows and Bolts peppered the Dwarven line and Dwarf after Dwarf fell.

Responding in kind Dwarven missile fire fell among the Elven warmachine crews and knocked a Great Eagle out of the sky. The Anvil of Doom also rang out and Sadithe watched as a unit of bare chested fanatical Slayers rushed forward in a magical charge straight at the Dragon Princes of Caledor. His right flank now falling back or engaged in close combat Sidathe watched in further horror as a huge stone landed squarely in the middle of the Citizen Spear Regiment to his left. Shards of rock tore through the militia unit killing scores of Elves. Ahead of him the Dwarven battle line roared in triumph and surged forward. With his milita unit decimated, his right flank weakened and stuck fighting Slayers, and his magic ineffective Sadithe halted his armys advance.

As the Dwarven battleline drew closer a cheer rang from the Elven army as the Dragon Princes butchered the Slayers and surged forward... only for their advance to be halted as the armies remaining Great Eagle fled into their ranks. Dwarven missile fire continued to prove stronger than those of the Elves the Citizen Archers nearly wiped out by a unit of Dwarven rangers who suddenly appeared on the Elven left flank. Sadithes magic though was beginning to take its toil as were the efforts of the remaining Bolt-Thrower. Dwarven artillery crewmen were dying in droves as were many of the Warriors to his front. With the battle swinging too and fro an irressitble urge overcame Sadithe and the White Lions who guarded him. To his front left he saw a Dwarven Thane holding aloft a Great Axe inscribed with a Master Rune of Challenge.

White Lions charge into the Longbeards flank in response to the MR of Challenge
(Note Warriors on their right flank)

Unable and unwilling to flee from its magical call Sadithe and the White Lions charged at full speed at the Thane and his accompanying Longbeards. Crashing into the Dwarven units flank the Elves hacked gleefully at Dwarven armour. However, the Dwarven Thane was cunning, his Challenge had placed the Elves in a vulnerable position their own flank exposed to another unit of Dwarven Warriors. If he and his Longbeards were able to hold the Dwarfs would outflank and outnumber the Elves and victory would be theres. Even the sight of an Elven Dragon now flying toward them across the Battlefield did not disuade him from his plan. Once the White Lions and the Archmage they guarded (whose eyes burned with a strange brightness) were dead the Elven army would be considerably weakened.

From atop his Dragon the Dragon Mage looks ahead to the advancing Dwarven army

Crappy Elven dice rolls see Elven magic fail horribly to wound anything.
Payback for a Dwarven Bolt-Thrower throwing a 1 to wound the Dragon Mage

But it was not to be. The White Lions of Thrace proved to strong and the burning hate filled eyes of the Elven Archmage too frightening and they field in panic. Running with them the Dwarven Thane looked back as an Elven dagger rammed into his throat, around him his Dwarfs fell to Elven axes and the last sound he heard was a cheer as his Standard was raised high above Elven ranks.

The White Lions sweep all before and capture the Longbeards Standard

With the primary unit in the Dwarven army dead the battle now swung hugely in the Elven forces favour. Sadithe could not contain his joy as he turned and saw the Dragon Mages magic burn scores of Dwarfs alive before him. Joining his magical powers with his the Dwarven RuneLord was powerless to stop wave after wave of Elven magic killing and maiming the remaining Dwarven units. Soon, those few that remained began to flee as the Dragon Princes swept all before them. Throwing down their arms the few remaining Dwarfs fled the battlefield, smoke from their burning comrades hiding their panic fuelled retreat.

The Dwarven army trys to salvage something from its impending defeat, but...

The Dwarfs find themselves surrounded and soon to be destroyed by fire and magic

Sadithe exulted his vengeance was complete, his hands were covered in Dwarven blood and his troops cheered as they raised the Dwarven armies standards above their heads. Victory was his!!!

Warmachine at 15pts

Going to try to sneak in a few small 15pt games of Warmachine against Toshi over next couple of weeks. By sneak I mean finish work early and drop by his place on way home to spend an hour (or two) gaming :) 15pts isn't alot which makes army composition tricky. But there are some units I want to try out in particular the High Reclaimer who is a Warcaster I haven't used extensively in the past but whom (in Mk2) is an EXTREMELY good guy to take.

I don't want to confuse myself too much as the options are endless so have restricted myself to 2 lists for the time being (1) Balanced (2) Infantry only. Jack Heavy is another option but the High Reclaimer works best with Infantry units not Warjacks.

Balanced @ 15pts
Reclaimer
Revenger
Knights Exemplar x6
Knights Exemplar x6
Deliverers x6

Revenger Light Jack is reasonably good in close combat but more importantly has an arc node. Two units of Knights Exemplar will be great in melee combat especially with the Reclaimers ability, and the Deliverers (while inaccurate) provide some needed missle fire.

Infantry only @ 15pts
Reclaimer
Knights Exemplar x6
Exemplars Errant x6
Paladin Order of the Wall x2
Temple Flameguard x10
Wrack x3

A unit of Errants gets swapped in for one unit of Knights Exemplar for the ranged attack. Wracks help protect the flanks and boost the Reclaimers focus. Mk2 allows you to take 2 Paladins so why not do so (ill proxy a Seneschal as the 2nd one) to get some huge melee power - these guys can kill Warjacks by themselves. A full unit of Temple Flameguard round out the mix as well.

White Lions finished & WIP HE Archers

Final pictures of my completed White Lion unit, thinking of running them 6 wide when I use them so will need to build another movement tray for them. Snow has definitely turned out pretty well benefits of applying it over a white undercoat. Final two models for back rank will get pinned on tonight - all of the models have been pinned to their bases.

Updates, updates, updates

Missed out on the first night of the year for my local gaming club last week, but will be going this week (hopefully) for a nice little rematch vs. Adam - 2,250pts my High Elf tournament list vs. his Dwarfs.

Finally finished the White Lion regiment last night and have started on my Archers and the Bolt-Throwers. Also decided to put together a few small unit fillers for the White Lions something with trees on them to give them a nice forest look, just have to find some ideas on how to build them. Also decided to build Balsa wood movement trays for them as I did for my Dwarfs, but with proper flock etc on them to make them presentable.

In other news I have registered for my 2nd tournament of the year - RUNEFANG III in Wellington. Its composition scoring system is very interesting as rather than composition scoring adding to your overall score it is used to adjust your battle points for each game. Going to make things very interesting, e.g., you beat a guy whose army is comp'd as weaker than yours his battle points get adjusted up yours get adjusted down. On that basis I might just have to take my Dwarfs again (a) because I need time to work out how to use High Elves properly (b) I want to get a workable infantry only HE list and (c) I want to re-jig my Dwarf army and take a Cannon.

Christmas has also come early with two great pieces of news...

First, my Warmaster High Elf Eagles are on their way to New Zealand from Phoenix Forge finally allowing me to complete my High Elf Army. They were the one unit I didn't have.

Second, Privateer Press have announced the release of another Protectorate Unit - a Standard Bearer attachment for the Exemplars!!!!!! Just awesome, going to be a great year for Warmachine.

The models look fantastic - going to seriously have to start saving for all of the new units that are being released this year.

WIP - More HE White Lions pics + painting backlog

As promised more pictures of my White Lions - with back two yet to be completed ranks (minus 2 models that will be pinned on once the others are done). Still waiting washing detailing etc, hopefully get some time tonight.

Amongst my painting backlog box is this little guy that I plan on using as a unit filler. Unfortunately, I didn't paint the base white before applying the snow flock and consequently it hasn't turned out very well. Going to have to scrap ALL of the flock off and redo it. You can see the difference between the snow on this base, and the snow on the properly prepared bases of the White Lions quite easily.

Then there is my current painting backlog (well some of it anyway). The box at the moment contains all of the recently paint stripped High Elf units that MUST be repainted before Easter and NATCON 2010. The figures in the top right (round bases) are a unit of Deliverers, some Knights Exemplar and some Warjack wreck markers for my Protectorate of Menoth army.

As you can see I have the old style Bolt-Throwers not the new ones, mainly because I scored 4 of them off TradeMe for around $20 or something ridiculous like that.
