Ogre Ironblaster completed

Finally got my Ogre Ironblaster finished last night, turned out pretty well.  Could do some more detailing on the animal skin on the cannon and on the cannon metal work but Im happy with the way it is.

Next steps are the rider and then some smoke, flame and cannon ball coming out of the mouth of the cannon like I did for my Dwarf cannon (see below) just bigger.

After this its the Mournfang Cavalry that are on the painting table

Surprise call-up for 600pt FOW Tournament Saturday

Got a late call up to fill a spot at a one-day 600pt Early War FOW tournament on Saturday.  Should be a great event and a big one with 36 competitors from around the country.  One of our club members Bob Pearce is organising it, and as an added bonus its very local about 15 minutes drive away.

Luckily Id been working on 600pt lists a while back as I was planning on attending but missed out on the last spot - karmas nice to you sometimes.  Going to be taking the following:

Gebirgsjager Infantry Company (Burning Empires)
CHQ - 100pts

w. 2 x SMG, 2 x MG34
Combat Platoon - 175pts
w. SMG, 6 x Rifle/MG, 1 x Light Mortar
Combat Platoon - 130pts

FOW Tournament Results

Battlefront posted the final results for Panzershrek XI the doubles tournament I competed in last month on their website last week.  I had to leave before the results were announced on the day as I had a damn migraine but it was nice to see that Jeremy and I didnt get the wooden spoon again, despite our team name :)

Official write up

Also looks like BF have once again used several of the photos I took at the tournament in their tournament write up which is pretty cool.  Got a bit of stick about the picture of my army which they used as it includes *ahem* 4 of my Forged in Battle PzIII's - nice of Battlefront to give an alternate manufacturer a bit of free advertising.

My 1100pts of Grenadiers (proxied by FJ of course)
Have 3 more weeks of gaming at the club before I attend my next FOW event Call to Arms in Wellington.  One surprising piece of news from that tournament is the small size of the WHFB field only 17 competitors at the last count.  Considering that last year when I attended their were 12 in the Karak Eight Peaks WHFB campaign event (including me) and another 24+ in the main WHFB field this is huge drop in numbers.  Maybe like me people are starting to get a bit gamed out....

Lots of updates - Ogres, Ogres & FOW

Getting a lot of painting done focusing on my Ogres and the few odds and ends I need for Call to Arms FOW competition next month.  Still have 3 FOW Battle Reports and 2 Ogre WHFB Battle Reports to post as well, but work is stacking up (new semester started) and its getting harder to find the time.  Anyway hope the following pics will prove interesting in the interim...

Ogre Ironblaster WIP

Unit of 10 Ironguts finally finished

Close up of Standard Bearer and Champion

von der Heydte & Panzerfaust Trap Teams

Probably a couple more nights to get the Ironblaster finished including the Leadbelcher who rides it, then its onto my Mournfang Cavalary (x4) and a unit of 3 x 2cm Flak 38's which I will be taking to Call to Arms.

WIP - Panthers, von der Heydte & DAK Fallschirmjager

Getting some more painting in and tried my hand at the Hitlerhalt camo scheme described by BF on the latest series of FOW tutorials.  The base camo is the same scheme/process I used on my PSC PzIVs but with one difference I painted over the Dark Yellow areas with Desert Yellow - didnt have any non-spray Dark Yellow and it seemed close enough.  Dots were applied using the end of a piece of wire, not very uniform but I really like the effect.

von der Heydte and his Panzerfaust Trap teams need to get done in time for Call to Arms in August.  Going to get the standard FJ camo job I did on my other FJ units.
Also making progress on repainting my 4th FJ Platoon in Desert uniforms to use as either MW-FJ from the North Africa/Tunisia lists, as FJ in a Panzer list or as proxy Schutzen infantry.  Still some highlighting to do, the rifles and other weapons to fix up and some work to go on the webbing and skin but the general tone is there to see.

FOW Battle Report - Panzershrek Game 1

Fair fight up against the Stanton brothers OSS Company's mixture of Veteran troops and Partisans with a set of special rules that meant the entire battle was fought at night and where only they could double time.  Made it very interesting particular when we kept rolling 4" for our visibility and they kept rolling 16-20"
We dig in around the left hand objective - we were attacking so stacked our armour up here.  Our opponents had no real AT that could hurt us, but the ability due night time and terrain to ambush our tanks easily.

The right flank - AA in the middle on the hill, kind of a waste in the end.

The enemy

The enemy

The left hand enemy objective and our principle target during the game.  Armour advancing up the road infantry coming from the right of the railway station and to the left of the road.  Unfortunately the enemies early double movement and recon moves meant we couldnt put this into action.

Grenadiers moving up ready to angle left for our target

My PzIIIs just before disaster struck....

Jeremys Brumbars move up, but the night time visibility stops us from firing at anybody, and we are still hampered by the terrain which would make defensive fire if assaulted difficult.

Our attack goes in, armour up the middle, infantry to the right and behind the armour.  The enemy though are carefully positioned and we cant draw LOS on them or get the visibility we need.

DIASTER!!! 3/4 pz IIIs and 3/3 Brumbars bog down on terrain - night time rules required us to reroll successful bog checks, and with the Brumbars bogging on 1s and 2s we were scuppered just as our units were lined up to move in.

Meanwhile as the tanks bog down the enemy infantry advances on my Grenadiers dug in around the left hand objective.  Luckily in the subsequent assualts my defensive fire keeps all of the enemy Platoons pinned down and inflicts a lot of losses on them.  Jeremys HMGs are also nicely placed to the right and do furthur damage.

Quick get some infantry up to protect those bogged down tanks from Assault

Another enemy assault fails as the troops are kept pinned down, their support to the rear now has to angle around them to get into assault position.

Enemy AT and Bazooka fire takes out my PzIIIs whose survivors break and run scuttling their tanks as they do so

Meanwhile on the right the enemy rushes our other objective, but we manage to keep them back temporarily.  But their infantry outnumber ours 4 to 1 so its a losing battle.

Another failed infantry assault on our left hand defended objective
Outnumbered 4:1 in infantry but with a huge superiority in armour this game was pretty well balanced, at least until the night time rules were revealed and things got distinctly difficult. Only being able to move 8" meant we couldnt rush his defences or outflank anyone with our armour.  The enemys ability to double time in the dark and recon moves gave them a HUGE advantage, that and some incredibly bad luck with dice which killed our armour and kept our LOS down to 4" for several turns didnt help.  But we held off superior numbers on the left and came close to defending the right despite a massive local superiority in numbers to the enemy on that side.

A couple of infantry assaults by our troops on the left effectively broke that enemy flank but without the armour we were unable to exploit our advantage there.  The result a 5-2 victory to the Stantons as their troops swamped our weakly defended right flank and took the objective there.

Panzershrek XI FOW armies on parade

Completed my 3rd ever FOW tournament over the weekend the Panzershrek doubles event.  Jeremy and I managed to score our first win but we also suffered a couple of bad loses but overall did a lot better than last year, and worked pretty well together.  Both looking forward to next years tournament.

Going to post battle reports of each of our five games over next few days - have a WHFB one to go up as well - but for now here are some pictures of some of the various armies and tables from the tournament.  I did take pics of all of the armies but unfortunately not all of them were in focus :(

All of the pictures should expand out so enjoy....

My army 1155pts of Grenadiers proxied by my Fallschirmjager

The other armies were pretty to look at, some great painting skills in evidence as you would expect.  Terrain not as good as 2011 but still pretty good and overall the tournament was great fun.
