Latest Dwarf stuff & Ogre Kingdoms display board

Update ~ Before you read on check out the latest links to leaked pics at Faet212 and Bugmans Brewery they are awesome... and I do mean awesome.

More and more Dwarf related pictures and tidbits are being released across the internet including pictures of new models and the February release schedule.

From Plastic Krak
Longbeards, Hammerers & new Dwarf character
Dragon Slayer & new Dwarf character

From Bell of Lost Souls
GW early February release schedule

Overall, the new models look great especially the Hammerers and the Slayer.  The Longbeards look promising.  The old metal Longbeards were always fantastic and I've envied my mate Adam who has 20-30 of them.

Couple of items to note from the release schedule
1. The Dwarf book isn't listed meaning it must be coming out later in the month
2. The prices for the new models

The Prices
Dwarf Dragon Slayer US$21
Belegar Ironhammer US$21
Dwarf Hammerers (Box) US$50

The figures look great but the prices don't - that's right I'm grumbling.  For those of us in New Zealand its important to note that the listed prices are for the Northern Hemisphere and that they are always inflated for those of us South of the Equator.  While the current exchange rate is pretty good at US$0.83 to NZ$1 GW's pricing system means that exchange rates don't count for beans for pricing products on sale down here. So for the 3 listed items I would expect the NZ prices to be around

Dwarf Dragon Slayer NZ$35
Belegar Ironhammer NZ$35
Dwarf Hammerers (Box) NZ$70-75

For a box of what will most likely be 10 models I really don't care how great the new Hammerers are I won't be getting any not when you need 30-40 (3-4 boxes) to make a decent unit.  If the new Ironbreaker rules are as good as they sound then maybe Ill source some of those - but atm I think Ill wait for the new book and start prerusing Ebay for the old versions.

Latest ~ If the ironbreaker rules are as good as the latest pics then price be damned ill be buying

On another note I started work this week on a display board for my Ogre Kingdoms army which I will be taking to the NZ Team Championships in March.

Same process I used for my Dwarf display board.  $8 cork board with Polystyrene on-top to form the required shapes.  Paper mache on top of that to give it strength.  A layer of Filler on top of the dry paper mache followed by painting.  The pit/hole on the left-hand is going to be a fire pit that I plan on filling up with various bones/bodies.... more soon.

Ruination WHFB Tournament report

The bloody and scarred remnants of the Throng of Karak Thorinkin marched slowly through the gates of the hold, King Druegar Stromnisson at the fore his armor dented and scratched almost beyond repair.  The throng had fought countless small skirmishes and 4 pitched battles against the forces of Lustria, the hated Greenskins and a fourth foe that the Dwarfs of Thorinkin were too ashamed to mention.  The grand campaign had not gone well and of the proud Warriors, Quarrellers, Thunderers, Miners, Hammerers and countless war machines that had set out so many weeks before nearly half had perished.  All of the clans had suffered but none more so than Clan Theolik, of the 300 elite Hammerers who had marched with the King barely 30 remained alive and all of these bore countless scars.  And of the regiments of Clan Theolik Warriors who had also marched none had returned....  the forces of the Old World had proven strong, much stronger than the Thorinkin had anticipated.  Upon reaching the gates of the hold King Druegar stopped and watched and unashamedly wept as his battered army marched past him into the holds interior.  Upon the battlements countless Dwarfs watched silently counting those that returned, too stunned to speak when they realised the extent of the defeat the throng had suffered.

As the last regiment of Warriors passed through the gates the King looked back down the road upon which they had marched.  Bowing his head he turned and walked through the gates.  Only when they shut quietly behind him did his strength finally fail him.  Blood poured from his many wounds and seeped into the carved stone floor of the hold soaking it a deep red... the few remaining Hammerers of his bodyguard rushed to his aid.  Barely alive Druegar was carried through the hold only time would tell if he, Karak Thorinkin and the Dwarves would be able to rebuild and gain the strength needed to survive in an Old World whose foes where now too strong for any Dwarf to stand against.

Well I got back from Ruination late Sunday night and while it was incredibly enjoyable event, pushing 4000pt armies around was a great change of pace, results wise it was very disappointing.  I played 4 games over the two days and was brutalised in all of them unfortunately.  Biggest disappointment though was that my digital camera finally died (it was nearly 10 years old) and consequently I couldn't take any pictures over the weekend.

Game 1 - Blood and Glory vs. Lizardmen (Mal Patel)
Mal is one of New Zealand's ETC players, a very nice guy but also an excellent tactical player.  He had a strong Lizardmen list combat wise but one light on magic with no Slann just a couple of Priests.  Facing 3 Carnosaurs I opted to concentrate my initial shooting on them.  Unfortunately I completely overlooked the impact of the Comet of Cassandora which Mal 6 dice monkeyed in the first turn.  Having grouped most of my warmachines close together along with several other units the impact of an exploding comet in Turn 1 was not fun - it went down in his Turn 1 and exploded in mine.  Turn 1 ended with a Cannon, Organ Gun and Stone Thrower destroyed along with 1/2 of my Hammerers.  Shooting proved ineffective and while I managed to kill one Carnosaur by concentrating on that I allowed the rest of his army to close with me unopposed.  End result I got slaughtered and Mal earned a solid 20-0 victory.

Game 2 - Battleline vs. AGGHHH Dwarfs (Simon Switzer)
I don't mind playing Dwarf on Dwarf although this match up did prompt a large number of amused comments from various people.  Now I like Simon I really do but he is the kind of Dwarf player people grumble about.  Basically regardless of who he faces he always castles up with 2-3 HUGE blocks of infantry which never move supported by several warmachines.  I hate castling, absolutely cannot stand it.  I much prefer to charge straight ahead, get stuck in and throw a lot of dice.  Yes Ill get slaughtered but I still get to throw lots of dice which is what I like doing.

Anyway I charged forward, Simon shot me to bits and then I got into his units.  I basically killed everything except his massive big Hammerer block which had all his characters bar the AoD in it.  End result because I couldnt kill that block and because he had killed so much of my stuff I ended up losing 7-13.  AHHH

Game 3 - Blood and Glory vs. Orcs (Hamish Forbes)
My favourite game of the event against club mate Hamish with Grimgor Ironhide, 3-4 big hordes of Black and Savage Orcs and a Wyvern.  I shot him to bits and charged in, using the AoD to great effect.  The game came down to one massive pitched battle between his 40 Savage Orcs, 3 Big Bosses a Shaman and my Hammerers with Lord + a unit of Warriors.  Over the course of 4 1/2 turns these units chopped each other to bits while I shot up everything else on the board.  End result I killed all of his Savage Orcs, the Shaman blew himself up and I got 2/3 of his Characters but lost all of the Hammerers and all of the Warriors.  The later were killed when Grimgor Ironhide smashed into their rear to set up a combat between my Dwarf Lord, a Thane, 4 Dwarf warriors and 2 Big Bosses and Grimgor.  End result he won, just and broke my army solid victory to Hamish.  But damn was that a fun game.

Game 4 - Battleline vs. Lizardmen (Hagen Kerr)
Never played Hagen before but have always wanted to as he is one of the really nice guys in the NZ WHFB community, plus he plays Dwarfs as well :)  His list was more typical with the Slan, some Scar Vets a lot of Skinks plus other big beasts.  It was another knock down drawn out blood match with units moving everywhere, shooting galore, magic up the wazoo, Anvil charges left and right, monsters stomping on Dwarfs, failed charges, rear charges, multiple charges, challenges and things blowing up.  Lots and lots of fun.  I lost the game but had a blast.

End result - I think I got the wooden spoon not sure yet as results aren't out yet.  But I think I should get it as this is the first event I have been too where I haven't won a game.  But I did get to wear my pointed Dwarven helmet all weekend which was fun and to throw lots of dice.

Thoughts on the Event
4000pts is fantastic and if its run again I will most definately enter again - with Dwarves as I just enjoy playing them. The event was run really well - thanks Jeff for umpiring and Pete for organising it - and it doesn't need any changes to it.

Army List review
You can check out all the army lists from the event here and see my army and my list here.

I had 5 units of these 50 shots in all. Worked extremely well and gave me a lot of options and a strong ability to deal with chaff.  The Thunderers +1 to hit and AP was a welcome bonus.  But I think a single big unit of Thunderers would probably work better say 18 or so.  Struggled with deployment at times.

Had 2 units one of 30 and a smaller one with 8 and the MR Grungi.  In my last game I used this a a Lordpedo with the Lord at the front and the Hammerers behind him 2 wide.  Hammerers are great but I have to stop using them in horde formation as honestly they get killed to quickly and I need at least one left alive to keep them Stubborn.

Units of 30 are solid but not large enough.  Either need a character in them or should be in blocks of 40. Will need more models.  Rangers are golden and Throwing Axes were fun to use.

Anvil of Doom
First time using this in an event and it was awesome.  Really enjoyed using it.  Risked Ancient Power twice, it worked once but failed the second time.  AoD also never blew up.

The Stonethrower and the Gyro were the heroes of the event.  The Stonethrower - and I am not kidding here - NEVER MISSED, NOT ONCE and it killed a ton of stuff.  Wish I had two of them.  The Gyro was also fantastic but 2 would have been better.  Organ Guns were OK but I could do without them and the Cannons were solid but I would swap one for a Stone Thrower.

Only used the MR Challenge once.  2+ RR and 5++ was good enough and the +1 to hit with Ro Snorri was a good option.  He killed a fair bit and got into combat every game but was hampered by the Hammerers dying so quickly behind him.

What would I change?
No idea as I don't know what the new book will bring.  But if we focus on the old book I drop the Organ Guns and 1 Cannon and bring a 2nd Gyro and 2nd Stone Thrower.  Id also try and fit in a horde of Slayers just for the hell of it.

More Dwarf army book rumours

This time from Bell of Lost Souls

Runelord can't add DD
Dwarf army can add 2 DD every magic phase

Non-Dwarf players will love this.  They complain endlessly about our ability to shut down their magic phase, completely forgetting of course that their ability to cast spells at us, or our inability to cast them back, still greatly weights things in their favour.  Personally I don't like this but I guess the rules needed tidying up.

Anvil is Bound spell (can plus the S for dwarf)

If its more than one bound spell then this is a good change, but it does mean the Anvil moves from the shooting to magic phase which essentially negates its ability to be used consistently.

Dwarf Gyrocopter (new models) can make two version:
1 is bomber(max can take 2)
2 is fight with machine gun (max can take 6)

Now this I really like - bombs are back and I assume Machine Gun is just a revamped Steam Cannon

A lot new special character
1: King of Eight Peaks
2: Engineer with big gun

Master Engineers get taken by a lot of people but not by me as I don't see the need for them, but if the rules change this might be interesting.  Big gun? King of Karak Eight Peaks suggests a new special character.

All the new models are infantry (with out Gyrocopter):
1: Hammerer
2: Blacksmith
3: Longbeard
4: Slayer
5: Irondragon(name not confirm) new shooting unit
- like Chaos Dwarf IG 4+armor S4 T4 weapon is flaming attack
(The Hammerer Blacksmith and Longbeard is in same box, the Slayer
is the other box because no armor, Irondragon other box. All the new models
very cool.)

Now this is interesting.  Blacksmith suggests either a new character or unit champion model for Warmachines, doubt that its a new unit.  A new shooting unit seems strange as we already have Thunderers and Quarrellers.  Maybe its a Dwarven flamethrower unit?

All the rune are same and warmachine too
The magic item:
1: The armor can give the user T10

Armour giving me T10 yes please but I suspect it will be 60+pts so a Lord choice only.  Don't believe that runes will stay the same as (a) many are redundant in 8th with the rule changes (b) others are over priced and (c) others are simply never taken and (d) new ones are needed to mirror changes to the common magic items in 8th edition; more banner choices especially.

Source also says that Hammerers can get 2+ AS with a 6+ ward. Probably with a rune. I think these are maybe Ironbreakers?

6+ WS I would accept as being accurate would assume this is a Parry Save for Hammerers akin to Swordmasters WS vs. Shooting.  2+AS for Ironbreakers means Gromil armour is getting improved to a 3+, so AS goes to 2+ with a shield.  This will benefit characters as well who get Gromil as standard.  However, unless Ironbreakers are going to be S4 then I still won't take them as S3 infantry with hand weapons just isn't worth the hassle.

And finally if dwarfs are still only movement 3 then it doesnt matter changes they make as our tactics will remain extremely limited

Latest new Dwarf army book rumours: My thoughts

Its not long now probably only a month until the release of the new Dwarves armybook for WHFB 8th Edition and we have finally had some more rumours surface from Faeit212.  The last game from Spain several months ago and mentioned a few new kits, these latest ones offer a few more clues.

Models Rumours
Core Troopers won't get a new box.

Doesn't surprise me as (a) there isnt that much money in core troops, especially Dwarven core and (b) the current core kit Warriors is actually very good.

Light Armor Infantry Box is Slayers and a second build I couldn't recognize. They look indeed weird, however the Slayers are more dynamic than I'd expected them to be.

If Light Infantry is Slayers that means something must be changing in terms of their rules.  But I would suspect that this new box is not related to new rules/units but a GW response to the Avatars of War miniatures that have hit the market recently i.e. Slayers 1-2 years ago and the fantastic Pathfinders a few months ago.

Heavy Armor Infantry Box is Hammerers/Ironbreakers dual build. They look just so much better than their older versions, quite some variation considering their former lack of such.

Both of these guys needed new models - although I really like the current old school metal Hammerers (hopefully people sell of a lot of them when they buy the new ones so I can snap more up cheap).  Some dramatic new poses would help though.

The "War Altar" is a dual build of Throne and Anvil I believe. It wasn't quite clear, but it seems to be possible to give a "regular" Dwarf King a toned done version of the Throne.

War Altar rumour is a new one would seem to be aimed at a unit pitched between Throgrim and a Lord on Shieldbearers.  Are they giving the Anvil movement alah the Chaos Warshrine, Lizards Engine of the Gods or Dark Elf Cauldron?

The plastic clampack character looks amazing. Simply. Amazing.

Say what???  WTF is a clampack??  If its a hint at Dwarven weapons teams being added to the armybook (like Skaven have) that would be awesome.

The Gyrocopter is quite a lot better than the previous one, but not quite as good as it could have been. But it is a lot bigger, the dwarf isn't really that much sticking out It blends in nicely with the rest of the army.

I like the current one, and am not sure how a bigger one would work.  Given that previous rumours suggested that Gyros would come in unit boxes of 3 the suggestion that the new model is bigger doesn't fit?  Units would require slightly smaller models to work - think of Terradons which are already smaller than the current Gyrocopter.  Regardless I will be getting another one of the old-school ones.

The Tunneling Vehicle looks pretty awkward considering the awesomeness of the rest of this release. I think the rumoured "big cannon" could be a dual build with this one, it looks pretty much twice as good as the Tunneling Machine, especially considering how much potential there was.

Tunnelling machine!!! Yeehay!!! Sounds cool.  Big Cannon - BOOO!!!

Playing Style
The playing style will be quite similar to the previous one, but with a wider variation of possibilities.

Which means something to help with movement and tactical flexibility... maybe?  Happy to know that the army won't change too much

Ironbreakers will be even harder to crack open while Hammerers are No-brainers (Dwarves are slow, but those can hit like a meteorite if they get you!).

Harder to crack open... Gromil armour for Ironbreakers going to 2+AS rather than the current 4+?? That would be nice.  Hammerers with 2 attacks or maybe ASF like White Lions.  IB need something to make them worthwhile

Cannons are a bit toned down but are still as accurate as always. I think there's a decent chance of not having a single misfired shot within multiple games.

Toned down means less than S10 or D3 rather than D6 wounds.  You dont get misfires now with the Rune of Forging. Oh I can hear the wails of complaint from non-Dwarf players already.

Overall things are looking up.

What I would like
Make Slayers skirmishers or ranked troop choices and give them a WS alah Savage Orcs tough skin, or let them take Runic Talismans or Tattoos

Allow unit champions to take Runic weapons

Allow the BSB to take a GW

Rangers to be a separate core choice NOT an expensive upgrade

Scrap Longbeards and bring in an army wide 'Old Grumblers' rule making all Dwarves immune to panic or immune to panic if their General/BSB is alive or within 12" something like that.

Miners able to charge in the turn they come on.

Thunderers move and shoot.

Gyrocopters - remove template partials and give them bombs back (one use only).

Gromil armour on Hammerers and Gromil AS to be improved.

Hammerers some kind of attack bonus.

Runic banners that give buffs to units e.g. +1 Strength, MR1 etc

AoD to give unit buffs the same as basic augment spells.

Premade runic items and new runes (as most of the current ones are redundant).

Oh... and lots and lots and lots of new FLUFF and artwork.

Ruination army lists out

The army lists for next fortnights 4000pt WHFB event have been released and they, as you would expect, contain the usual suspects and assortments of horribleness that makes life difficult for pure gamers i.e. those who play Dwarfs ;)

You can check them all out here

Amongs the 18 strong field are the following armies:
  • Lizards - 4
  • Dwarfs - 3
  • Warriors of Chaos - 2
  • Orcs n Goblins - 2
  • Empire - 1
  • High Elves - 1
  • Brettonians - 1
  • Daemons - 1
  • Dark Elves - 1
  • Beasts - 1
  • Skaven - 1
There is also quite a collection of Special Characters and various armies with dozens of Heros in them.  Among the flavour to be seen next weekend are:
  • 2 Archeons - 1 with Throgg.
  • Grimgor Ironhide
  • A Skink cloud list lead by 3 Carnosaurs
  • Hellebron & Morathi
  • Karl Franz
  • and a Dwarven Thane called "Uri Firmshaft"
Should be an interesting weekend.  Aside from the Dwarfs and High Elves I have absolutely no idea what any of the stuff being taken does but I do know that its going to hurt a lot when it hits my Dwarfs.  Really wish I had taken the White Dwarf now..

Way of the Tiger: Going Old School

Had a massive clear out of the mountain of books still to be unpacked in the garage over the weekend  (in between watching the Ashes of course) and made the hard decision to sell off/give away several boxes worth.  The exercise was well worth it for the discovery of 5 hidden treasures among one small box.  These guys...

I had forgotten that I'd picked up the first 5 books in this series at the last Red Cross charity book sale for about $5.   What followed was an extremely enjoyable trip down memory lane with paper, pencil and dice working my way through all 5 books.  Still fun and challenging after all these years.
