Betrayal at Calth - Word Bearers Terminators

Finished the Terminators from Betrayal of Calth.  Painted up as Word Bearers as I don't have any CSM versions yet and have always wanted some. Only issue is the lack of power weapons as they are standard CSM gear but the options are still pretty good.

First Game of 9th Age Fantasy Battles (Guest Post: McCrae)

It has been a long time since I posted my initial post, but I have had a busy year. Yesterday I had my first game of 9th Age. I was rather impressed with the rules and had a lot of fun. It was warhammer as we know it with improved rules, better balance and more variation in units.

For those who have not heard of the 9th Age it is a community project to continue the WHFB game system after the disaster that was Age of Sigmar. It has a lot of traction in Europe and some areas of the US and is becoming a more and more streamlined ruleset. They are slowly tweaking the 8th edition rules to be more cohesive and easier to use. The new 0.10 and 0.11 beta editions are looking really good as the rule designers have taken the plunge and simplified some awkward rules for magic and cannons etc. If you want to have a look the rules can be found here:

I decided to take my Sylvan Elves (Wood Elves) for a test spin against some Warriors of the Dark Gods (Warriors of Chaos) played by a great french guy called Jules with an impressive beard.

I took a list as follows:

High Druid, Level 4, Path of Wilderness, Dispell Scroll 260
Treefather Ancient, Avatar of Nature, Entwined Roots 295
Forest Prince, Forest Guardian Kindred, Armour of Destiny, Whirlwind Blade 270

Forest Captain, Forest Guardian Kindred, Battle Standard Bearer, Light Armour, Shield, Dragonscale Helm, Lucky Charm, Potion of Swiftness, Sacred Spear of Cadaron 175
Druid, Level 2, Tome of Arcane Lore, Path of Nature 120
Dryad Matriarch, Fertile Seeds, Path of the Wilderness 95

25 Forest Guard, Spears, Shields, Light Armour, Innate Protection 6+, Full Command, Veteran Standard Bearer with War Banner 295
29 Dryads, Entwined Roots Upgrade (S5), Champion 430

8 Sylvan Sentinels, Additional Hand Weapons, Hawthorn Shots 128
7 Sylvan Sentinels, Additional Hand Weapons, Hawthorn Shots 112

Treefather 220

WIP: Betrayal at Calth

Had to wait a fortnight after getting my box set to start assembling these guys but progress is now being made.  Decided to start with the heroes, Contemptor and Terminators.  Of the models in the box the only ones I'll paint up as Ultramarines will be the Terminator hero and possibly one squad of Tactical marines.  Everything else Terminators included will be in Word Bearers colours.

Only issue with painting the Terminators as Word Bearers is that the current (suxy) CSM Codex has CSM Terminators equipped with power weapons and bolters as standard and there is only one power weapon in the box.  I have a few others spare but they're all right handed which meant some tricky conversion work to get them to fit.  I'll have a play around later on to see if I can get them to work.

The Sergeant is getting Chaos'd up with a few bits.

Polyfilla on all the bases prior to model assembly

A slight modification on the Contemptor I cut the torso off the legs so I could rotate it slightly making it slightly less static.  Did look at options for pinning the weapon arms so I could interchange them and for putting the Rotor Cannon on the left arm (an easy job) but as I already have an Assault Cannon armed Dread went with the other weapon option instead.

School holidays now so should have a lot of spare time (kids depending) to get these guys painted up ready for gaming next year (no gaming for me till March due to Cricket)

Betrayal at Calth has arrived and its lovely

Thanks to a club mate Simon who ordered them from a friend in the UK I was able to get hold of the new Betrayal at Calth boxed set for NZ$200.  Arrived yesterday and its awesome.... Only issue is I have no plastic glue left so now I have to wait for a couple of days to start assembly. Oh and 22 days till Star Wars is here

Finished - Forgeworld Gal Vorbak

Finished these guys off this morning before heading out to play cricket.  Turned out well in the end despite some early hiccups.  Photos taken from phone so light balance isn't that great.

Pictures are all pretty big so if you click on them they should expand out
The finished unit - although I still have a couple of grass tufts to add to the bases

#1

#2

#3 - my favourite of the 5

#4
As a bit of size comparison this is one of the Gal Vorbak #3 next to a Forgeworld Space Marine in MkIII Legion Armour, and a standard GW Chaos Terminator Lord.  FW have played on the mutation aspect of the Gal Vorbak and writing of Aaron Dembski-Bowden who provided some extremely vivid descriptions of how Argel Tal and the others changed from standard Astartes into the Gal Vorbak.

FW Gal Vorbak vs. FW MkIV
As another great comparison point all of the Gal Vorbak have MkIV pattern armour which has been expanded, broken and mutated by the change process.  Its interesting to see how this compares to the un-mutated MkIV pattern armour of the standard Marine.

While I was painting the Gal Vorbak I also got my 2 Obilterators finished as well just need to complete the basing and they're all done.  The mutated areas on these guys has been done differently as its skin rather than bone.

WIP Forgeworld Gal Vorbak:

I've been looking forward to building and painting these guys ever since FW revealed the figures.  The Gal Vorbak are central to the Word Bearers and their leader Argel Tal is by far the best character within the Horus Heresy series.  Talos of the Night Lords and Kharn from the World Eaters (two more of Aaron Dembski Bowden's creations) are the others.  It's taken me a while to find the time to start them but I began the process the other night.

Unlike the majority of FW kits that I've put together before (MkII Assault & MkIII/IV Tactical Marines) these guys were far easier to construct in terms of the number of pieces.  The MkII Assault Marines for example were a nightmare.  Each of the 5 Gal Vorbak came with

  • A single torso piece including legs and power pack.
  • Two separate arms
  • A Head
  • A exhaust vent for the power pack
So 5 pieces for each figure all relatively easy to assemble and put together.  However, my continuing issues with FW resin and superglue meant I had to resort to pinning to get the arms on.  Not a big deal as the end result is always a stronger model.

Pack contents
To help with construction each figure has a letter identifier on its base (A-E) and this is matched with the corresponding sprue with the arms and head etc.

Pinning - one in each shoulder for the arms and one in at least one foot to attach them to the base
The bases you see in the pics aren't the final look as I redid them last night to make them more visually appealing and to give me a stronger surface to adhere the leg pins to.
Detailing on these guys is just awesome

Should get them completely assembled and on their bases tonight then its time to base coat and start the painting process.  So more soon

Warhammer is dead long live the King(s of War)

Following Pete Dunn's announcement on Fields of Blood that the New Zealand WHFB Team Championships would be shifting to Kings of War and a later date next year I placed an order yesterday for this...

Now I have to admit that I was reasonably OK with shelving my remaining Fantasy collections and concentrating solely on X-Wing over the next few years.  The key reason being at least with X-Wing I know I am going to get regular games.  The WHFB communities shift to either 8th Ed, 9th Ed or KoW meant that it is relatively fractured not something you want to see here in NZ where the gaming community is already quite small; smaller still if you look solely at the regular tournament players.

I had looked at KoW but before now it hadn't really interested me.  Playing 8th would be fun but if your one of only a handful of people doing it why bother.  9th Ed for me comes with all the attached red-tape baggage that is ETC and honestly it doesn't interest me as its not an official company supported rule system.  Hence the only thing that will keep it going is community and player support - if no one plays it, it will die off.  Locally thats my one big problem there are simply not enough active regular gamers around.  The situation is only going to get worse over the next 12 months as a couple of my regular X-Wing opponents disappear for work/personal reasons.

KoW is something a lot of people have been shifting to and it is played at my local club by a couple of people.  But I resisted buying the rules as Age of Sigmar pretty much killed my enthusiasm for anything other than X-Wing.  Now with NZTC shifting to KoW and Pete Dunn seemingly backing the system I more than happy to give KoW a go... after all the rulebook is only $25, I spend more than that each week on coffee.

However, I don't see myself playing that much over the next 6-12 months anyway for a couple of reasons (1) Cricket season has started so no gaming for me really until the end of March and (2) as stated my regular playing partners are leaving town... still the book will be a nice bit of reading.

No "Crack" just "X"...... Wing that is

Well I got my WHFB mojo back and even packed my Ogres and sleeping bag all ready for Cracks Call but unfortunately my kids got to me first and managed to infect me with their kid germs... pesky things just keep passing them back and forth between themselves and me (my wife never seems to get anything).

So no gaming this weekend, will have to say farewell to WHFB some other way. I did get some games of X-Wing in this week though playing my first ever games with Scum and my new HWK that I picked up at Cerberus last Sunday.  No TLT as I don't have the cards but it was still fun.

Game 1
Scum
Kath Scarlet - EU, HLC, Outlaw Tech, Daredevil
Syndicate Thug x2 - BTL-A4, Autoblaster, Seismic Charge, Unhinged Astromech

Rebels
Chewbacca - all tooled up
Corran Horn - FSC

Getting multiple shots with the Y-Wings is good in theory hard in practice against more agile ships, oh and Kath only works if you actually get enemy ships into arc
One Y-Wing goes down early while the other and Kath try to pin down Chewbacca - manage to strip his shields early and start taking off Hull points but he is chewing through the Y-Wings something awful.  Corran just chilling and flying casual
Daredevil works really well when combined with EU it gives you some great movement options
Kath R1 firing her HLC at Chewbacca takes him out but Corran is at Range 1 in her rear with his double attack thingy - could only take out one of them so I took out the Falcon.  Kath lasted a couple of more turns but the Corran took her down
Game 2
Scum
Palob Godalhi - Moldy Crow, Recon Specialists, Blaster Turret
Y-Wing x 2 - Unhinged Astromech, BTL-A4, Autoblaster Turrer
Z95 x 2

Rebel
Dash - all tooled up
Y-Wings x 2 - BTL A4, TLT

Ok - I really like the HWK and this set up was fun getting and keeping all that focus.  Worked well till I forgot my Y-Wing turrets work at Range 1 only...
Freaking Dash moves like a hyped up Interceptor - all that focus came in handy as it kept the HWK alive while the Z95s flew interference.
Target locks everywhere but only the TLT are able to fire not my Y-Wing turrets as I'm too far away.
Things kind of went wrong here - I should have K-Turned everyone but moved them up 1-2 instead crashing into everyone and stopping Palob from getting his focus.  The Y-Wings really weren't doing anything to each-other but Dash just ripped the HWK a new one.
Couple of very fun games in the end - we stopped Game 2 before it went the distance as it was getting late but things swung John's way after the HWK went bye bye.

One last tournament to say goodbye to WHFB

This weekend I'll attending what will in all likelihood be my last ever WHFB tournament; Cracks Call in Masterton.  The event is being run by the peoples champion "Neil Williamson" and if it follows on from last years shenanigans it will be a lot of fun.  It should also, hopefully, provide a nice final goodbye to WHFB.  With the release of Age of Suckmar my enthusiasm for Warhammer has disappeared completely and I am now - as you've probably guessed - sitting comfortably on the train to X-Wing land.  After 7 years, 100's of games, a couple of dozen tournaments and several armies I am calling time on Warhammer Fantasy.  I still have two armies on the shelf - Ogres and Dwarfs all fully painted and looking great but both now little more than plastic dust collectors.  Yes some people are talking about the "9th Age" rule set and keeping "8th Ed" going but I can't see it lasting and in all honesty I no longer care.  So Cracks Call this weekend 2000pts of (slightly modified) 8th Ed will be the last games of WHFB I play... here's what I'm taking.

Tyrant (General) - 312pts
w. Great Weapon, Armour of Destiny, Crown of Command, Dragonbane Gem

Bruiser (BSB) - 182pts
w. Additional Hand Weapon, Heavy Armour, Talisman of Preservation

Butcher - 160pts
w. Level 2, Lore of Great Maw, Dispel Scroll

10 x Gnoblars - 35pts
w. Musician

10 x Gnoblars - 35pts
w. Musician

9 x Ironguts - 437pts
w. Full command, Lookout Gnoblar, Banner of Swiftness

5 x Leadbelchers - 225pts
w. Musician

3 x Mournfang - 220pts
w. Heavy Armour, Ironfists, Musician

3 x Mournfang - 220pts
w. Heavy Armour, Ironfists, Musician

Ironblaster - 170pts

Did come very close to withdrawing from the event entirely and in all honesty I am still only 50/50 on whether I will still go or not... but we'll see
