X-Wing Repaint: Lambda Shuttle

Latest addition to the repainted X-Wing ship collection is my Lambda Shuttle (only have 1 for the moment but another one is coming soon).  Decided to stick with the Red/Blue theme a scheme I'm going to apply to all of my ships with the odd Elite pilot getting their ship painted in Green.  Final paint job turned out a lot better than I thought and all of the ships have been given a coat of GW Purity Seal to keep the paint job intact.  Colours and painting process used on the Shuttle were:

RED AREAS
Step 1 - Base of GW Mephiston Red
Step 2 - Wash with GW Nightshade (not as dark as Nuln Oil and I like the results better)
Step 3 - Layer with GW Mephiston Red
Step 4 - Highlight with GW Red Gore
Step 5 - Highlight with GW Wazadaka Red
Step 6 - Highlight with GW Wild Rider Red

BLUE AREAS
Step 1 - Base with GW Mordian Blue
Step 2 - Wash with GW Nightshade
Step 3 - Layer with GW Mordian Blue
Step 4 - Highlight with 70:30 GW Mordian Blue/GW White
Step 5 - Highlight with Vallejo Game Colour Azul Electric Blue

X-Wing Repaints: Tie Swarm

Finished first batch of repainted Tie Fighters last night.  My idea for a flying circus theme went out the window as my paint collection is depressingly small at the moment.  Consequently I opted for a simple red+blue palette for all of the ships simply alternating the layout and pattern of those colours across each one.  This should hopefully create a consistent theme but still give each ship a dose of personality.  And following on from my Soontir Fel being Green I opted to paint at least 1 Tie Fighter the same colour using it as the sign of an Elite Pilot.

X-Wing at CTA: the 100pt event

Took a slightly different list to what I had intended to a few weeks ago into Day 1 of Call to Arms running with a list I call the '2.5 Amigos' consisting of:

  • Soontir Fel w. PTL, Shield, Stealth
  • Turr Phennir w. VI, Shield, Stealth
  • Omicron Pilot w. EU, Ion Cannon, Tactician
Overall, it worked pretty well except and suffered principally from poor decision making and bad dice rather than any inherent weaknesses in the list itself.  The Ion Cannon proved to be a big bonus and actually paid off extremely well something it hasn't done in many friendly games for me.

Game 1 and my first ever against a Donut which turns out is scarily agile
Got lucky early on when I managed to kill the B-Wing in the first round of shooting.  Also managed to Ion a big ship for the first time sending it into an Asteroid.... but then the Donut hit back and took down Soontir with Turr following soon after

X-Wing Repaints: Tie Bomber

Got inspired after coming back from Call to Arms last night and decided (around 10pm) that I needed to repaint all of my Tie Fighters.  After playing a 120pt escalation game where I couldn't tell my Ties apart from my opponents I thought painting them to make them stand out seemed like fun.

As I don't use the Tie Bomber much I thought I'd paint it first as a bit of a test model.  Having already painted Soontir Fel green using the same scheme on the Bomber seemed like a good idea.

Long-term I thinking of going with a WW1 German airforce type look with every Tie painted up in different colours to create a Star Wars version of Richtoffen's Flying Circus.  That means adopting paint schemes like the patterns below.

Should be a fun project.  Already have an idea for recreating the lozenge pattern using OHP transparencies

Call to Arms Tournament Pictures

Back from 2 days of great X-Wing gaming at Call to Arms.  Took a mass of pictures, here's a random selection of the non X-Wing stuff.

Call to Arms X-Wing Lists

Been doing some juggling with various lists and decided I'm going to go with something fun rather than competitive for Call to Arms in a couple of weeks.  Quite frankly I find the meta and cookie cutter net lists kind of dull and I prefer (in X-Wing) the idea of taking lots of ships.  For both days I also want to get my Firespray onto the table mainly because I painted it and it looks cool and the Shuttle if I can because I think its awesome.  For both days I am also going to max out my points rather than leave the 1-2 pt initiative grab, just because...

Day 1 - 100pt Squadron
Not as good as Scum Kath but still Ok and Engine upgrades on big ships are just silly
My new favourite interceptor after Regionals - sorry Soontir but you just don't cut it anymore
& because I had 24 points left why not take 2 of these guys

Chaos Terminator Lord & Word Bearers WIP

Thanks to a load of bits from a couple of club mates bitz boxes (Jeff & John G) I've managed to finish adding the final touches to several of my Word Bearers.  Getting particular attention were the Aspiring Champions for each unit and my Terminator Lord who I decided to modify and add a few bits too.

I want all of my Aspiring Champions and characters to stand out from normal rank and file.  Horned Helmets are the easiest way of doing that so I chopped my original head choice of my Lord and added the horned one in its place.  I'd also given him a Lightning Claw which looked cool but doesn't work game wise so I chopped that of and replaced it with the Bolter w. a skull added for a bit of ick.
A dead Ultramarine is a good Ultramarine so adding one seemed like a good idea.
The little Daemon?? figure seemed cool so I decided to add it along with a few more skulls and some severed hands
Word Bearers need to carry the Word of Lorgar so my models are all covered with Oath Scrolls, Purity Seals and various parchments.  Champions and Characters get more plus Skulls from the various things they've killed.

Picture below is what the Lord looked like before I added all the bits to him

What the Lord looked like before I modified him

With the Lord and 15 CSM finished its onto the next projects in my Word Bearers army.  From left to right in the last picture we've got 10 Blood Letters, my 10 MkII Raptors whose bases I'm redoing, a couple of random CSM, 2 objective markers and 25 Cultists.

Got lucky and won an auction on Trade Me that secured me the 20 Cultists from the Dark Vengeance set which include a wide range of poses not included in the basic GW 5 model set.
