Local 40k Summer League: Daemonkin @ 1000pts

Gaming for me starts up again next week with a 40k Summer League held at a local gaming store/venue on Thursday.  and the re-start of my local clubs gaming night the following Tuesday.  Thursday's (if I can organise it) will be my 40k gaming nights while Tuesday's are going to be all about X-Wing and for my first 3rd ever game of 7th Ed 40k next week I've opted to go with a Khorne Daemonkin list.

The book and its kit out kind of suit my play style which is very much a "straight the guts lets go hit something and throw dice" kind of thing regardless of the army (or game system) I'm playing.  In the absence of a Bloodthirster (waiting for the budget to settle down so I can order one) I wanted to give some of my Betrayal at Calth figures a run so I'm going with the following list (the league is set at 1000pts).

I have no idea if its viable or not but it could be fun

  Chaos Lord
w. Plasma Pistol, The Blood-Forged Armour, Sigil of Corruption & Goredrinker

8 x Cultists
8 x Cultists
8 x Cultists

9 x CSM
w. Flamer, Champion with Combi-Flamer, Melta Bombs & Power Sword, Rhino with Havoc Launcher

10 x Raptors
w. Meltagun, Champion with Melta Bombs, Power Fist, Icon of Wrath

Hellbrute
w. Multi-melta, Powerfist

Lord goes with CSM in Rhino they and Raptors munch on up while Hellbrute provides fire support and Cultists run up and die to give me Blood Tithe points.

Book Review: Beast Arises 2 - Predator Prey

Predator Prey is the 2nd book in the new Beast Arises series from the Black Library.  The author for this one Rob Sanders is not one I'm familiar with so I had no idea what style it would adopt but in the end I was pleasantly surprised.

In Book 1 you were presented with two story arcs told from the perspective of the Imperial Fists fighting a Xenos race called the Chromes who then experience the first Orc incursion, and that of the High Lords of Terra and the political response to that Orc attack.  The first book while a good read felt rushed, like it was setting up the series rather than telling a story, and while the characters were good you never really got a good feeling for who they were.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

Betrayal at Calth - Word Bearers finishing touches

All of my Forgeworld Word Bearers shoulder pads and a small package of bits arrived from the UK today allowing me to start making the finishing touches to my Betrayal at Calth boxed set.  All of the principle painting and basing is done.  All that's left now is for the Oath Scrolls, Purity Seals and Shoulder pads to get some treatment and we are good to go.

30+ Forgeworld shoulder pads all glued on and ready for painting - look a hell of a lot better than transfers IMO

Book Review: I am Slaughter - Dan Abnett

Just finished reading the first in the new Beast Arises series from the Black Library.  1 book a month for 12 months set 1500 years after the Siege of Terror and detailing the rise of a new Ork Waagh that threatens Terra and the Imperium.

This latest effort by Dan Abnett is pretty good the story is well paced, you get a good feel for all of the characters (and there are a number of important ones) albeit briefly in most cases, and the overall sense of anticipation as you wait to see how things pan out is good.  The writing is also up to Dan's usual standards and you get an ok feel as to how Space Marines fight, although no where near as well as in standard HH books.  My usual reading fare is anything by Aaron Dembski-Bowden and I have a very strong Word Bearers bias but after reading this the Imperial Fists seem like an intriguing bunch.

I have two key criticisms of the book though.  The first is that is very short only 237 pages so I managed to finish it in a single day in between looking after 3 kids and housework etc.  An enjoyable read but still far too short.  You also realised about 1/2 way through the book wasn't leading to a conclusion but - as many movies do nowadays - simply setting you up for the sequel.  In that respect the novel read like 1/2 or even 1/3 of a decent book.  Given that this new series has 12 books in it I would suspect they will all be of similar length but would together constitute no more than 3 or 4 decent sized novels.  Its a pity as I think releasing larger books every 2 months would have worked and I would rather see good authors like Dan Abnett be given more opportunity to write a full novel.

Despite these reservations and being somewhat desperate for good reading material - If I read the Night Lords Trilogy or First Heretic anymore my copies will fall apart - I have pre-ordered the next book in the series.

Bloodletters of Khorne

Another unit I've had partially completed for a while now.  Decided to finish them off this morning while waiting for the cricket to start.  Unfortunately I stuffed up the original layers so have last a lot of the detailing but they still turned out Ok'ish.  Will make a nice addition to my CSM collection and allow me some ability to field a Khorne Daemonkin force which is starting to look like it will suit my play style pretty well i.e. they lack subtly and any form of tactical nous ;)

Only problem is that now I have finished these guys and the Betrayal at Calth set I have nothing left to model or paint?!?  The arrival of various bits and FW shoulder pads will occupy an evening for me but it looks like I'm going to have to start planning another project.

Been making lists for a local upcoming 1000pt Summer League and Khorne Daemonkin gets sticking in my head.  With that in mind a Bloodletter will most likely be my next acquisition, and maybe the AoS Daemons getting started kit which has some good models in it.

Betrayal at Calth - FINISHED :)

Finished the last of the models from Betrayal at Calth this morning - well finished except for the Forgeworld Word Bearers shoulder pads which arrive next week, a host of purity/oath scrolls and some grass tufts - but finished pretty much in terms of all of the painting.

In the end when combined with my existing Forgeworld MkIII/IV Tactical Marines I have enough now for 4 squads of 10 each with a Champion, Flamer, Melta and 7 Marines.  The Marines in 3 squads are armed with Bolters while those in the 4th have Bolt Pistols and Chainswords.  The remaining figures give me 2 Missile Launchers, 2 Heavy Bolters and another Bolt Pistol/Chainsword combo guy to mix things up a bit.

Retailer Review: Bitzbox (UK)

I have to admit I'm not that smart a gamer in that I tend to chuck out the bits I don't use from any kits I put together and then months later when I get a new kit regret not having the bits lying around to modify the new stuff. GW kits are fantastic for the range of options and extra bits they have in them but there are some that are quite hard to get enough of.  For my Word Bearers its Oath Scrolls, Skulls and Purity Seals all stuff I like to use to trick them out (see picture below).

After raiding mates bitz collections short of making your own the only recourse if you want bits is to order them from somewhere.  Over the years I've used several sources for this but the one that I've used the most and had the best experience with has been the UK retailer Bitzbox.  So far I've placed 4 separate orders with them over the last 12 months the most recent being last week.

Betrayal at Calth - Word Bearers Tactical Squad

Getting a lot of painting done over the Xmas/New Year break and my Betrayal at Calth set is nearly complete.  Latest (nearly) finished models are 15 Word Bearers Tactical Marines. I'm painting the entire box set as Word Bearers because why not.

Tactical Marines are 95% done as I'm yet to order the Forgeworld Word Bearers shoulder pads for them. I don't like the decals that came with the set that much and getting the shoulder pads keeps things consistent with the rest of my collection.  Final touches after the shoulder pads will be a host of Purity Seals, Skulls and body parts which should turn up in a fortnight or so, and some Army Painter winter tufts on the bases.

With some extra bits I managed to give a few of them Bolt Pistols & Chainswords.  With the 15 FW MkIII/IV CSM I already have these 30 will give me 45 models all up which is enough for 2-3 decent sized squads with options.

Betrayal at Calth - Word Bearers Dreadnought

Nearly completed entire BoC.  Just need to order Word Bearer shoulder pads from Forgeworld to complete the Marines.  Also  awaiting the arrival of a bunch of purity seals and other bits to finish the look I like.

Latest completion including first use of the decals is the Contemptor. Pics on phone so not ideal
