Snap Fit Death Guard & latest Death Guard modifications

A family holiday and a new batch of students kept me away from my hobby for the last week or so but I finally got some spare time to do more work on my Death Guard.  This included 2 lots of the new Snap Fit Death Guard models, and my 5th Dark Imperium DG Squad.

First up the Snap Fit models.  These are seriously good.  The sculpts are interesting, full of detail and of the the high quality you expect of GW kits.  The models themselves are incredibly easy to put together but also lend themselves to modifications with each piece scaled to match the new Death Guard models.

I assembled one set as pictured on the box but the other one I intermixed with my Dark Imperium Death Guard swapping arms and weapons around and adding a few bits left over from other sets.

Deathguard modifications & progress so far

Assembled my 4th (of 5) Deathguard Tactical Squads last night making a few simple modifications along the way. Also took stock of my painting progress from the last 3 weeks and its looking good. Taking a break for a week or two now as School Holidays are here but aiming to get rest of the models finished in time for the new Codex.

Progress so far 3 Tactical Squads, 10 Poxwalkers and 2 characters.

Modifications here were swapping of Powerfist and Backpacks between each model.  Removal of various extra bits like the bells and flaming things (whatever they are), and added Bolter for the former unit Champion.  The sword that the running dude had was given to another model.

Guy with the tongue sticking out (my favourite of the new models so far) got the sword from the running guy in the 1st picture and the arm off of the grenade dude.  Rest of the changes were simple arm swaps, and inclusion of the skull on the stick to cover up a gap in the model on the far right.

Basic head swap for the guy on the left and addition of a Deathwatch heavy weapon and an old CSM head for the guy on the right.  Added a handle above the right hand for the heavy weapon guy after the picture was taken.  All the models will require some green stuff to fix a few holes here and there and I might have a go at adding extra tentacles as well.

Poxwalkers & 3rd Deathguard Tactical Squad complete

Making steady progress on my various sets of Dark Imperium Deathguard.  Took a small break from the Marines and had a go at the first lot of Poxwalkers.  As with the Marines they're amazingly detailed models that really fit together well and look good.  I kept the painting process for the Poxwalkers fairly simple relying on multiple wash layers for the skin and only adding colour to the various mutations etc on each model.

WIP - 3rd Deathguard Tactical Squad & Poxwalkers

Nearly finished my 3rd (out of 5) Deathguard Tactical Squads this time with some slight modifications to various models in the unit.  Basically I swapped a few arms around, chopped off some of the weird extra bells & bugs GW seem to love so much, and added a former Deathwatch weapon to sub in as a Blight Launcher.  Plan on modifying my remaining 2 squads in much the same way.

Also made a start on my first lot of Poxwalkers - a few hours work and they're nearly ready.  Base coat and a few washes for the skin and then some basic colour highlights for all the buboes and tentacles.

Still a lot left to paint so its going to be a busy few months...

Death Guard Tactical Squad #2, Lord of Contagion & Noxious Blightbringer

Starting to smash out my Dark Imperium Death Guard.  2nd Tactical squad finished along with a Lord of Contagion and my first Noxious Blightbringer.   The Blightbringer models are actually pretty cool and look better as Psykers than the Plaguecasters which to me look a bit stupid.  Still they're good models to paint.  Slowly trying to add edge highlights to varying degrees of success.

Still have a lot to finish off but I'm enjoying the challenge and the new DG models GW just announced look amazing so it seems that I'll have a lot to paint over the next few months.

Death Guard Tactical Squad

Going with Death Guard from the new Dark Imperium, swapped my Primaris for another lot and acquired a 3rd so have a fairly sizeable collection of them to get painted now.  Beautiful models, frustrating at times as you keep finding details you've missed and I don't particularly like the Champion model the sculpting seems a bit off.

Enjoyed painting them decided to go wash heavy, used Army Painter Necrotic Spray undercoat rather than Black which worked extremely well.  Wanted to make the basing a bit different so went with a happy flowery theme as I think it adds a nice contrast with the rotted Nurgle look.

2nd Squads nearly finished and I've also made a start on the characters that came with the set.

Maelstrom 40k - Round 1 Draw

8th Ed pre-orders went live this weekend, next weekend is Maelstrom the last 7th Ed 40k tournament to be played here in New Zealand and the week after is when we get all of our 8th Ed 40k stuff so its an exciting time geek wise.

Turns out a lot of people wanted to say goodbye to 7th Ed so we have (for New Zealand) a pretty big field of 30 competitors hitting Wellington next weekend.  Round 1 draw is up and my Harlequin Reborn Warhost is going to be taking on some Grey Knights... should be fun

8th Ed 40k Harlequin rules leaks

Unofficially I might have been scanning a PDF copy of new 8th Ed 40k indexes focusing on the Harlequins and there are some very interesting changes to what is turning into my favourite army to paint and play.

Points changes

  • Skyweavers slightly cheaper.
  • Troupe Masters vastly more expensive
  • Caresses now cheaper
  • Kisses more expensive
Weapons changes
  • Caresses now S5 AP-2 doing 1 damage - lost ability to auto-glance vehicles
  • Shrieker Cannons rules modified special ability (Death Jester) does D3 mortal wounds
  • Kisses now S4 AP-1 but do D3 damage, so are better than before
  • Bladestorm has gone replaced with 6's to wound being AP-3
  • Hallucinogen Grenade Launcher is def. better and something you won't ignore
Army rules
  • Rising Crescendo means you can advance & charge in the same turn and fall back/shoot and charge in the same turn.
Unit Changes
  • Solitaire 8 attacks hit and wound on 2+ with Kiss or Caress so possible 24 wounds @ D3
  • Troupe Masters 5 wounds - Masque units within 6" re-roll wounds
  • Void & Starweavers slightly more survivable.
Overall, I like it the points values are freaking weird across this and all Index's looks like Power Ratings might be the bets way to manage lists particularly in the tournament environment.

Final 7th Ed 40k Tournament ever....

The weekend after next June 10th/11th marks the last ever 7th Edition 40k tournament here in New Zealand, Maelstrom, and possibly the last time I ever to get run a Soulbursting Reborn Warhost before the new stuff hits the shelves.  Had completely forgotten about it and the painting I need to finish off to get ready for it.  But submitted my final list this morning.  Should be a fun weekend especially as we all get to talk about 8th Ed and whatever things we've put on pre-order.

Final ever 7th Ed tournament list
Harlequin/Eldar Reborn Warhost @ 1500pts

Farseer
w. Jet Bike & Singing Spear
Death Jester

w. Lost Shroud, Haywire Grenades
Windriders x 3

w. Shuriken Cannons, Star Bolas
Skyweavers x 3
w. Shuriken Cannons, Star Bolas
Skyweavers x 2
w. Shuriken Cannons, Star Bolas
The Yncarne

7+ units in starting army means 2 can Soulburst in response to someone dying rather than the standard 1.  Everyone's Stubborn and as long as they're close together they can ignore Morale checks for losing 25%, and everyone within 12" of The Yncarne has Fearless and FNP.  Oh and there are a total of 12 Shuriken Cannons, 1 Shrieker/Shuriken Cannon & 3 Scatter Lasers in the list creating a total of 51 S6 shots each turn.

First attempt at Age of Sigmar

Well I got the General's handbook and printed out the Compendiums which allowed me to construct a couple of small 500pt(ish) armies based around my WH40k Daemons and ex-WHFB Ogres or Gutbusters as they're called now.  Played 3 quick games in the end focusing on the core rules only so no extra items and various unit rules got ignored.  This gave myself and my son, whose 7, a chance to get used to the game mechanics.  Turns out that didn't take long although I had to pose a couple of questions on FB as everything was so different to WHFB.

2 units of Ogres, a Tyrant and a unit of Leadbelchers vs.
1 unit of Bloodletters, 1 of Warhounds, 1 of Bloodcrushers and a Herald
First impressions it's very easy to pick up.  My son had the unit characteristics and basic game mechanics sorted inside 10 minutes.  We missed a few things early on like retreating, and any unit with 3" being able to fight that sort of thing but the games flowed really well.  Did have some issues with it though principally the lack of tactical depth.  In WHFB there was always a strong emphasis on movement, set up favourable charges, luring enemy units into poor positions, outflanking etc.  Charge reactions were a massive component of the game as well.  These have all been removed and the new mechanism while fun and simple to play doesn't really seem to require much other than charge in and bash people.  Did some reading though and it would appear that there is a layer of tactics to it I haven't grasped yet so I'll wait until I've played some experienced AoS gamers.

He's grinning because he's rolling 6's all the time and chopping me to bits

The other issue I had is of course whether or not I can use my existing collection.  Reading online it appears that some events ban the use of Compendium units which means the majority of ex-WHFB models/units are now out unless they have a corresponding warscroll.  For Dwarfs there aren't any which leaves me with Ogres and Daemons of Khorne.   I did download a few of the free books via the AoS app and worked out that I can at most field 2000pts of Ogres, and of Khorne Daemons but thats only by putting everything I have on the table.  That doesn't leave a lot of room for experimenting with lists, and designing specific builds which was always a key part of WHFB.

But still AoS is a simple game, one that I can get the kids into and it has a strong local player base which are all massive pluses meaning I'll be giving the game another go soon.  It also did encourage me to unbox my old WHFB models and put them out on the shelf again.

Another Harlequin Troupe completed... eventually

Been a busy fortnight painting wise  but one where I've jumped back and forth between a number of different projects. The latest thing to be completed is another lot of Harlequin players painted after I realised I didn't have enough models equipped with standard CCW or Caresses.

My process can be either very focused directed at just one model or unit or haphazard. The last two weeks its worked like this:

  • Need to paint something... lets do the Wind Riders...
  • Can't be bothered assembling them lets do the Fire Prism
  • Yah Fire Prism's cool lets paint that
  • Check patterns are so much easier on big surfaces
  • Boo finished the Fire Prism back to the Wind Riders
  • Farseer is cool but ah I've mucked up somewhere.. Windriders again?
  • Wind Riders are boring lets finish off those Skyweavers
  • Skyweavers still look hideous lets do the Yncarne
  • Ahhh Yncarnes tricky I need more Harlequin players with Caresses lets do those
  • Harlequin players are fun but...
  • Back to the Yncarne
  • Waiting for washes to dry lets give the Windriders another go
  • Back to the Yncarne
  • Yncarne finished
  • Touch up some Skyweavers... nope lets base the Harlequin Players
  • Players all based back to the Wind Riders
  • Oh look some Cultists...
Still a lot on the painting table to be completed and with 8th Age of Gulliman announced its going to be an interesting few months

Yncarne Completed

Well pretty much completed say 98% have some gemstones to finish off and I'm not entirely happy with the way the flames look but other than that she's all done.

WIP - Eldar Farseer & the Yncarne

With the Fire Prism finished I've started work on my Eldar Jet Bikes/Farseer and of course the Yncarne who I used in a game for the first time yesterday.  The Yncarne is a somewhat tricky model to put together.  I would strongly suggest that people (a) dry fit all the pieces together before gluing as many connection points are very small and others unclear in terms of their position, (b) don't assemble the whole thing prior to painting.  I of course only figured this out after I had put most of it together.

Painting wise I was worried (this morning) that I'd have to strip the Yncarne and start again but its starting to look a lot better now that I've added various layers to it.

On the tabletop she's pretty good although with only a 3+/5++ she dies fairly easily.  Some things I liked/learnt about using her:

  • Don't send her out alone.
  • The teleporting ability is pretty awesome but should be used wisely.
  • She will die to concentrated shooting.
  • She can (if you roll well) kill Saint Celestine in 1 round of combat
